After Manchester united 4-0 defeat at American Express Community Stadium, This means they cannot finish in the top four.

There will be financial consequences for yet another disappointing campaign, because of the way the Old Trafford club structures their player contracts.

The cut in wages is designed to protect Manchester United from the drop in revenue that results from not qualifying for Europe’s top club competition.


Manchester United will earn significantly less in prize money and broadcast revenue if they play in the UEFA Europa League or UEFA Europa Conference League next season.

Cristiano Ronaldo faces a reduction from £385,000 per week to around £288,000 if he stays for next season, the lowest salary the 37-year-old has earned in some years.

The club’s second-highest earner, goalkeeper David de Gea, stands to see his pay cut from £375,000-a-week to around the £281,000-a-week mark.
